Everton had accounted for a young Burnley team in the first week but they fell to a big 4-1 defeat at the Regional Athletics Arena at Eastlands against Manchester City. It was a similar Everton side to the one that faced the Clarets with Yakubu playing the first half alongside such as Dan Gosling and Jose Baxter.
City were 2-0 up inside 16 minutes through David Ball and Greg Cunningham but it was 2-1 at half time with Adam Forshaw having halved the deficit. There was to be no comeback though for the Toffees, Javan Vidal scored early in the second half and Ball got his second three minutes from time to complete the scoring.
On the same night Hull scored an easy 5-1 win against Sunderland at the Eppleton Colliery Ground. It was an astonishing result, particularly given that Ryan Noble gave the Wearsiders a first half lead.
By half time however Hull were 3-1 up. Tom Cairney equalised before Nicky Featherstone and Ryan Kendall added two more. The vastly experienced Craig Fagan scored twice in the second half.
Despite playing an inexperienced team, more so because of the number of players out on loan, the result left Sunderland reserve team manager Keith Bertschin fuming. He described the performance as unacceptable.
On Wednesday Burnley found themselves off the bottom courtesy of Liverpool's 3-1 win against Bolton. Argentinian Gerardo Bruna gave Liverpool the lead in the first half and that lead was doubled somewhat fortuitously ten minutes after the break.
Jordi Brouwer came on as a substitute and within seconds was on the scoresheet. He charged down a clearance from the Bolton keeper that bounced off him and into the net.
Bolton pulled one back when Adam Blakeman scored after French debutant Chris Mavinga had cleared off the line, but Alex Kacaniklic, another substitute, added the third with ten minutes to go after a Nathan Eccleston effort had been blocked.
Manchester United were the final winners of the week with a 2-1 win last night against Wigan at Altrincham. Wigan scored first via a Tomasz Cywka penalty. Anderson got the equaliser seven minutes before half time with Magnus Eikrem scoring the winner three minutes into the second half.
