Two of the five games were played on Tuesday with the other three last night, and it was at Radcliffe Borough's ground where Shrewsbury beat home team Bury on the same night as our win. Jon Taylor gave the visitors an early lead in this game but Bury were level on ten minutes through what was described as a stunning strike by Lenell John-Lewis.

Shrewsbury had been the better side but as Bury looked set to go in at half time level, the Shrews struck twice to take a 3-1 lead into the interval. Harry Honan got the first of them and Kris Bright got the second.

In a disappointing second half there were no further goals but that was enough to give Shrewsbury the points.

Twenty-four hours later saw the only home win in the opening week when Wrexham beat Morecambe 2-1, and they scored all three goals. There were no goals in the first half but it was home side Wrexham who took the lead just eight minutes into the second half with a goal from Kevin Gall.

Morecambe's equaliser came just a few minutes later from a spectacular header from Marvin Andrews into his own goal, but it wasn't enough to give the league side a point when Louis Moss scored Wrexham's winner ten minutes from the end.

Over at Cammel Laird, Tranmere hosted Macclesfield, and it was Macc who took the points although they had to come from behind after Adam McGurk gave Tranmere the lead on the half hour.

Hamza Bencherif equalised right on half time for Macclesfield and they were much the better side in the second half, a Colin Daniel goal winning it for them.

The final game of the week, at Bamber Bridge, was between Preston and Accrington and probably brought with it the biggest surprise of the week with Accrington winning it.

A strong Preston side that included the likes of Darel Russell and Jon Parkin as well as former Burnley players Richard Chaplow and Neal Trotman. They fell to a goal from Max Rodriguez and it was a performance and result that didn't impress coach David Unsworth who was joined in the dug out by Jamie Hoyland.

After the game, Unsworth said: "It's a disappointing start; it's a disappointing performance and a disappointing result and there's not a great deal more to say about it. We got outdone in every department and it was very frustrating."

The win sees Burnley sat at the top of the league courtesy of the plus six goal difference and we now move on to play Morecambe next week, the game being played on Wednesday at Kendal Town's Lakeland Radio Stadium before we return to Turf Moor two weeks later for our first home game against Accrington.
