Burnley were biggest cup day winners

Whilst the young Clarets were beating third place Preston, the two other teams up at the top, Carlisle and Walsall were both surprisingly knocked out.

Carlisle went out on penalties at Bradford City whilst Walsall, who dropped their first points of the season last week, were shock losers at Doncaster.

It wasn't a good round for our teams at all. Besides ourselves we had Morecambe, Stockport and Tranmere winning ties between two North West Conference sides and the only club to beat a team from the North East Conference were Rochdale who won 3-1 against Grimsby.

Apart from Carlisle and Walsall, there were also defeats to North East clubs for Accrington, Macclesfield, Oldham and Wigan.

Accrington suffered the biggest loss of those clubs, losing 4-1 at Rotherham in what was the highest score behind our win.

We'll now await the draw for the second round whilst preparing to concentrate on the league again this coming Saturday when we play host to Bury at Gawthorpe.

Although the league is somewhat distorted at the top right now, with Walsall having three games in hand, the Clarets go into the game on Saturday in second place, and with leaders Carlisle without a game it means a win would see us go top of the league.
