Manchester City, held by Blackburn last week, got back to winning ways on Tuesday with a 2- 0 home victory over Hull. It took them just five minutes to go in front when Robbie Mak broke into the box on the right hand side and placed his shot across Boaz Myhill and into the far corner.

City brought on substitute Paul Marshall on the hour and with his very first touch he set up the second goal for Abdi Ibrahim to turn home from close range. That win took City above local rivals United into second place in the table.

On the same night Sunderland had no problem in winning the battle of the bottom two against Wigan at the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground at Hetton on a night of three penalties. The home side had Kenwyne Jones in their line up but he lasted just nineteen minutes before being forced off with an injury.

However, the star of the night was young local born striker Ryan Noble who scored all three Sunderland goals in a 3-0 win, two of them from the penalty spot, taking his goal tally for the season to 27.

The first spot kick came in the twelfth minute after a foul on Jones. Noble made no mistake from the spot and midway through the half got his second when he got on the end of a cross from Robbie Weir to turn the ball home.

His third, and Sunderland's second penalty, came ten minutes before the break and again he made no mistake, opting for the goalkeeper's left side this time.

There were no further goals but right at the end former Burnley loan player Russell Anderson gave a penalty away and got himself a straight red card into the bargain. Wigan couldn't convert it with Tomasz Cywka's penalty saved by Trevor Carson.

Burnley's game against Everton, scheduled for Monday, fell victim to the weather as did last night's clash between Manchester United and Bolton.

That's it now for 2009 with the Clarets having managed to play one game so far at Accrington, and only six games in total. Our next opponents are Sunderland.
