Will there be new signings?

Peter Crouch - a target for Colin Lee at Walsall
The confusion seems to have come from the fact that the chairman and the manager have had very different views on the sale of Gareth Taylor. Barry Kilby has explained that the club have turned down a number of offers but then accepted the offer from Forest because of the package available and the fact that the player would be worthless in financial terms within a short time.

He has said that some of the money will go to Stan and some to cover the shortfall in season ticket sales but then Stan said he had to go to prevent the club from going into administration, something that the chairman never even hinted at.

If Stan is right then surely there can be no further money for him, there can be no further signings because every penny of the Taylor deal will be required just to keep the club running and preventing the administrators from knocking on the door. But then he talks about needing new players and hoping to be able to sign them in the near future.

The suggestions are though that there will be new players coming in soon with a striker the top priority. A whole host of names have been speculated on but we can confirm that neither Ruud van Nistelrooy nor Thierry Henry are Turf Moor bound.

Currently the whole speculation centres on Villa Park and one young and one experienced striker. The young player is Peter Crouch and he was mentioned by the sources close to Gareth Taylor when they revealed that Taylor was on his way to Forest.

Villa boss David O’Leary has said that none of his players are available but it would be no surprise if Crouch went out on loan although he has turned us down once and is now wanted by Walsall on loan.

The more experienced player is former Manchester United player Dion Dublin who we believe the club have spoken to with a view to a temporary Turf Moor move.

Many others have been linked, even Everton’s Duncan Ferguson who would probably injure himself getting out of the chair at home and Sheffield United’s Wayne Allison although Stan doing business with Warnock does seem a but far fetched.

I think it all centres on Villa Park and this is where our next signing could come from.

In the midfield area it all seems to have cooled on Newcastle’s Bradley Orr. We watched him in the Magpies’ recent reserve game against Everton and made an enquiry but that does not appear to have been followed up although Orr is expected to move out on loan soon.

Despite the signing of David May we are still interested in defenders and two have been linked with us in the last couple of weeks.

Apparently only an injury to Matt Elliott at Leicester prevented Gerry Taggart coming in on loan, we will have to await Elliott’s return to check that one out, and cash strapped Luton’s Australian central defender Chris Coyne is also interesting us along with a number of other clubs.

But if as Stan says the Taylor deal was needed to prevent us from going into administration then we can forget all these and other players. We simply will not be able to bring anyone else in.
