Will the Turf Moor Kettle boil tomorrow?

Last updated : 01 April 2011 By Tony Scholes
Kettle was the referee who finally broke that long run without a penalty almost four years ago when he gave us one at Sunderland. That night he had a difficult game and wrongly awarded penalties to both sides. This season he somehow missed the handball leading to Norwich's stoppage time equaliser against us.

That game at Sunderland was, without any doubt, his worst in six Burnley games to date. In front of the television cameras there were a catalogue of poor decisions that affected the game.

He's certainly not a referee who will shy away from using his cards, and in 25 games this season there have been no less than 87 yellow cards and a hefty ten red cards. Of those yellow cards, 41 have gone to home team players and 46 to away team players.

In a three week period in October and November he sent off three home players. That included Norwich's Andrew Crofts shortly after he'd got away with the handball goal against us. His other seven red cards have all gone to away players including two from Yeovil in a 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday and two from Stockport as they lost 3-2 at Bradford City.

In his last game, Wycombe's 3-0 win at Morecambe last week, there were three yellow cards. They were Chris McCready, Andrew Fleming and Scott Brown, all Morecambe.

Kettle is not the most mobile of referees and is often some distance away from play and the game, given his record, is not likely to be card free.

Trevor Kettle is currently in 47th place in the RATE THE REF table.

The assistant referees are Bob Roberts (Lancashire) and Jason Whiteley (West Yorkshire). The fourth official is Ryan Johnson (Manchester).
