We've got Thorpe at the Ricoh

Last updated : 08 December 2006 By Tony Scholes
It will be just the second time Thorpe has refereed a Burnley game, and although he got little wrong in the first one, our 2-0 defeat at Palace last season, he wouldn't let the game flow. He was a referee who I described as being keener on nit picking than following the game. He wanted to be noticed and would take any opportunity to bring the game to a halt or hold it up to move the ball back a couple of feet for a free kick.

It was a poor game that day, one he could have hardly influenced, but one he hardly helped. He also got his yellow card out four times in the ninety minutes, two each, with Garreth O'Connor and Frank Sinclair getting ours.

He's not the most over zealous of referees when it comes to cards and has averaged between two and a half and three per game since joining the Football League referees list in 2002. That average has continued this season with 41 yellow card so far in 16 games. His home/away average is reasonable with 19 of those cards going to home players and 22 to away players.

There have been three red cards in those games. He sent off Grimsby's Gary Jones in a 2-2 draw at Peterborough and more recently both Simeon Bambrook and Roy Stamer of Farsley were dismissed in their 2-0 FA Cup replay defeat at Franchise.

He will be tomorrow assisted by Ron James (Buckinghamshire) and Patrick Keane (West Midlands) and the fourth official duties will be carried out by Stephen Cooke (Nottinghamshire).
