Wade Elliott calls time on playing career

He's just completed a season at Ashton Gate having been there on loan during the 2013/14 season, but at the season's end he was offered the under-21 role with Cotterill suggesting he had a big decision to make on his future, whether to go into coaching or look to continue playing.

Today, Elliott, who was 36 at the end of last year, has decided to accept the role, a decision that has delighted the manager who brought him to Turf Moor in 2005.

He said: "Wadey has been taking his coaching badges with a view to becoming a manager or coach after his playing career had finished. In truth this opportunity has probably come a little earlier than expected for him because I know he could go on and do a job for a few League One teams."

Elliott had previously been with Birmingham who he joined from us in August 2011. He'd been a Claret for just over six years during which time he played in 282 games and scored 23 goals.

He scored some outstanding goals, twice winning the Clarets Mad Goal of the Season Award, in 2006/07 for his goal at Sunderland and in the following year when he struck in a home game against Charlton.

But there is no doubt which was his big goal for Burnley. It came on 24th May 2009 at Wembley in the play-off final and assured him of a place in Burnley FC folklore. The picture above shows him, centre, on the open top bus tour with his team mates.

He proved to be a fantastic signing for us and Clarets Mad wish him all the best in his new career as a coach.
