Vokes on the brink of the Euros

Last updated : 07 September 2015 By Tony Scholes

One of those games is against Bosnia & Herzegovina in Zenica before they go back to Cardiff to face Andorra whose current European record is played 47, lost 47, and that means even Wales, who have found some bizarre ways over the years to miss out on tournaments, are virtually home and dry.

It will be their first ever appearance in a Euro Finals and their first tournament since all of the four British nations qualified for the World Cup Finals in 1958.

Vokes has made two substitute appearances in this last round of matches, and should he be selected for the finals, as expected, he will become the first ever Burnley player to feature in a Euro Finals tournament.

Only seven players have previously played for Burnley and been involved in a Euro Finals tournament. Five of those were prior to singing for the Clarets while the other two were after they'd left Burnley with one of those two, Dimitrios Papadopoulous, picking up a winners medal although he was used mainly as a substitute.

Trevor Steven, who played for England in the 1988 finals in West Germany, was the other to have played after leaving Turf Moor.

The five who went on to play for Burnley after playing in this tournament were Keith Newton (England - 1968 in Italy), Chris Waddle (England - 1988 in West Germany), Chris Woods (England - 1992 in Sweden), Paul Gascoigne (England - 1996 in England), and Stephen Ward (Republic of Ireland - 2012 in Poland & Ukraine).

Vokes is the only current Claret to have played in a full international to date during this international break, but four former Clarets have been in action. Both Kyle Lafferty and Chris Baird were in the Northern Ireland side that beat Faroe Islands while Steven Fletcher played in the Scotland team beaten in Georgia.

In goal for Hungary for their game against Romania was Gabor Kiraly. Now back with his first club in Hungary, he kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw in what was his 96th full international.

Well done also to both Cameron Dummigan and Luke Conlan who were in the Northern Ireland under-21 team beaten 2-1 by Scotland. Former Claret Shay McCartan also played with goalkeeper Conor Mitchell on the bench.

Meanwhile, Khius Metz is currently in Italy with the Republic of Ireland under-19 squad for a friendly against the Italians being played this evening at the Stadio Simonetta Lamberti, Cava de' Tirreni.

All the full caps have been added to the INTERNATIONALS section of the site which can be found within the Players drop down menu.
