Vokes - is he a target?

Does Howe have an interest in Sam Vokes?

It seemed as if it was going to be all quiet with the loan window closing in a week's time and manager Eddie Howe admitted earlier today: "We are still a work in progress and I don't think that's going to change short-term.

"Everything we are doing is working towards long term to make sure this club can be competitive with the resources that we have available for years to come."

Vokes was linked with us during the summer but that was no surprise. He's a player who Howe will know well from Bournemouth where he scored 16 goals in 54 games before making a move to Wolves at the end of the 2007/08 season.

Howe was in the Bournemouth team on the day that Vokes, then 17, made his league debut as a 17-year-old in a 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest.

He's struggled to get games since his move to Wolves and 43 of his 47 league appearances for them have been from the bench whilst he's also enjoyed loans at Leeds, Bristol City, Sheffield United and Norwich.

The big striker is certainly bang in form and scored twice last week as Wales beat Norway 4-1. The Southampton born Vokes, who qualifies due to having a Welsh grandfather, has now won 19 full caps.

Right now, however, with Martin Paterson edging back towards full fitness it seems more likely that any squad strengthening, if possible, would be to give us more defensive options.
