Underdog - The Story of Britain's less fashionable teams

Last updated : 07 October 2011 By Tony Scholes

As we all know, there is more to football than that and the fortunes of the lesser lights in the game have been featured in a new book simply entitled UNDERDOG!

It's the latest book from Burnley fan Tim Quelch who has previously written both Forever and Ever, a book of supporters' recollections of following Burnley FC from 1960 to 2000, a book commissioned by Barry Kilby, and Never Had It So Good, recalling the wonderful story of the 1959/60 Championship season.

Tim now tells this romantic story of the fortunes of some of British football's struggling sides and less fashionable teams over the last 50 years, a fascinating insight into the most dramatic half century in English football. The book also includes interviews with a wide number of footballers and managers from that period.

Yes, it looks at the temporary hardships experienced by such as Chelsea and Manchester City and the victims of changing economics, like Burnley and Preston but it revels in the glories of clubs such as Northampton Town, Workington, Carlisle and Leyton Orient, all who briefly punches triumphantly well above their weight.

It also covers the cup runs of the likes of Norwich, Hereford, QPR and Wimbledon, the latter being one we know all about at Burnley, the recovery of clubs such as Aldershot and the struggles at other clubs.

It's a tale of improbably successes and abject failures, of inspired leadership and dogged hope, all set against the backdrop of the changing times of English football and life outside.

All proceeds generated from this book will be donated to the Alzheimer's Society. Tim, like many, has seen the effects of this terrible illness at close quarters as I did myself when I had to watch my own dad struggle with it in the 1980s before passing away, after years of suffering, at the age of 67.

It's an illness that has hit many former footballers including our own Tommy Cummings and Adam Blacklaw who have both passed away in the last two years, as well as other former Clarets .

The book is being published by Pitch Publishing at £14.99. It's a solid read at over 400 pages. The ISBN no. is 9781908051134. It can be ordered on various websites e.g. Amazon, Smiths, Waterstones as well as from Pitch publishing.
