A fourth minute headed opening goal from Burnley's Jimmy Dunne (pictured) gave the Clarets an early lead against the Hornets this afternoon at Turf Moor.

Despite having Kevin Long sent off for a professional foul in the 28th minute, Harry Kewell's Hornets were unable to break down a resilient Burnley outfit.

A 75th minute penaltly lashed high into the net by Burnley's Patrick Bamford was enough to send the Clarets into the next phase of  this year's Premier League Cup.

The victory ensured the Clarets qualification for the Premier League Cup group stages and they will now face Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland and Cardiff in home and away fixtures.(TEC).

Burnley lined up: Pope (GK); Flanagan, Birch, Howarth, K Long; Dunne, Jackson, O'Neill, Chakwana; Bamford, Koiki.

Subs: Mitchell, Yao, Leitch, McNeil, Pingling
