The first of those two strikers is Steven Thompson who, yesterday, committed himself to a further year with St. Mirren who he joined after leaving the Clarets in the summer of 2011.

He's a Saints fan and I don't think there would have been much hesitation for the 36-year-old striker who has netted 43 goals in 125 league appearances in his four seasons at Greenhill Road.

Thompson had a difficult 2014/15 season, partly because of injury and more so the incident in April when he wounded team mate John McGinn having thrown a pole in jest which left McGinn with blood pouring from his thigh. Earlier this month McGinn instigated legal action against Thompson.

The striker said yesterday: "After the disappointments of last year I am super motivated to make sure I enjoy this season and help St Mirren challenge in the Championship.

"Last season was hugely disappointing, missing half the season through injury, but with a good pre-season behind me this summer and having worked really hard over the close season I am confident I can be an asset to the team."

St Mirren, having been relegated from the Scottish Premiership last season, will play 2015/16 in the Championship. One league higher, having survived in the play-offs, are Motherwell who today confirmed the signing of Wes Fletcher who left York at the end of last season.

Fletcher, like Thompson, suffered from injuries last season, this having had his first season at York curtailed by a long term injury. He has still left Bootham Crescent with 20 goals in 68 appearances of which 50 were starts.

He's signed a one year contract with the Fir Park club and manager Ian Baraclough said: "I've seen a fair bit of Wes and know exactly what he is capable of. The club has also had him watched on several occasions and feel he is ready to add something different to our squad. His game will suit the way we want to play and along with David Clarkson will add more competition."
