Turf Moor debut for referee Martin

Last updated : 11 September 2015 By Tony Scholes

He became a regular Football League referee in  th e 2012/13 season as he followed his dad Andy who was a Premier League assistant referee until 2006. He kicked off that season with a red card in his opening game, dismissing Gillingham's Tom Flanagan in their 1-0 win at Wycombe.

It was, to be fair, his only red card of the season and there were only eight in his first three seasons although the five last season came in two games. He sent off Brian Stock and Warren Cummings, reducing Havant & Waterlooville to nine men against Preston in the FA Cup and Millwall's 2-0 home win against Wigan last April ended 10 v 9.

He's aided Preston again this season, red carding Watford's Miguel Britos as Preston won the Capital One Cup tie 1-0, but that's his only red card in six games that have brought 17 yellow cards, of which nine have gone to home team players and eight to away team players.

His last game was the Johnstone's Paints Trophy game between Shrewsbury and Oldham on 1st September. It ended 2-0 to Shrewsbury with no cards in the game.

In fairness, he refereed the Yeovil game well enough although it wasn't a difficult game to referee.

The game won him a RATE THE REF rating of 76.29 out of 100 and eighth place in the table.

He did OK that afternoon at Yeovil. It was an easy enough game to referee but he did it well. What can we expect? He's not a referee too eager to go to his pocket and in today's football he actually started the 2013/14 season without a single card in his first six games.

The assistant referees are Robert Jones (Merseyside) and Jason Whiteley (West Yorkshire). The fourth official is Richard Wigglesworth (South Yorkshire).
