Top club loses at home and bottom club wins big away

McCarthy, not a hoot about Watford

Forest were a goal behind after just ten minutes when Huddersfield visited the City Ground but by half time they'd turned that round and led 4-1 with Radoslaw Majewski getting a hat trick, his first goals of the season.

It ended in a 6-1 win for a Forest side who have now gone up to eighth in the table and that was the biggest win played in front of the biggest crowd in the midweek games.

The smallest crowd witnessed another comprehensive win and this was surely the result of the week as Peterborough, kicking off at the bottom of the league, hammered Millwall 5-1 at the Den. That's two successive wins for Posh following their win against Leicester on Saturday which has lifted them back off bottom place with Bristol City being dumped there.

Millwall were seventh when we went there in January. Our win there took us above them in the table and it has certainly had a detrimental effect on them. That was the first game in a run that has now seen them lose five successive games.

Wolves have joined Peterborough and Wolves in the bottom three. It was in the late 1980s that Wolves last played outside the top two divisions but they are being seriously threatened with a return.

They won 2-1 at Blackpool in front of the Sky cameras on the Friday night before Christmas. They have not won since and have collected just four points from ten games. The run has helped bring the departure of manager Ståle Solbakken after he admitted the club was in crisis.

They were 13th after the win at Blackpool. They were 18th by the time Solbakken was replaced by Doncaster manager Dean Saunders, but the Welshman has yet to engineer a win in seven games and they are now seriously threatened with a second successive relegation.

At the other end of the table there was a shock for leaders Cardiff who suffered their second home defeat of the season with Brighton winning the game 2-0.

It's probably just a hiccup for the club who seem to throw away promotion chances year on year. They are still five points clear of Hull who beat Blackburn, and eight points clear of third place Watford who have been somewhat upset with the criticism aimed at them for fielding so many loan players.

Manager Gianfranco Zola said: "I think it's very unfair. We're not doing anything wrong, we haven't breached any rules."

Football League rules only permit five loan players in a match day squad and clubs can take only two players on a standard loan from one club, as we did last season with Ben Mee and Kieran Trippier from Manchester City.

However, loan deals arranged with clubs from outside England are recognised as full transfers and that means there are no limits to how many can be brought in.

It appears the Holloway rant has caused some alarm bells to ring. On Tuesday Watford won at Ipswich but their boss Mick McCarthy had a different take on it.

"I don't give a hoot what they're doing personally," he said. "If it's within the rules, it's within the rules. Let them get on with it. We've have played against a better team than us who have played within the rules of the game. You won't get me moaning about it."

Time will tell how long it remains within the rules.
