Thompson was released by manager Eddie Howe at the end of last season and he was immediately linked with a return home to join St Mirren.

After signing for the club he said: "It has been a life-long ambition of mine to play for St Mirren as they were my first love in football. It will be a brilliant moment for me when I pull on a Saints jersey for the first time and I'm really looking forward to it.

"My wife and I decided that when our daughter was going to start school that we wanted to come back home for that, so it was always looking like we would be coming back to Scotland this year.

"I did have interest from other clubs in Scotland and a few in England as well but once I decided to come back to Scotland I told my agent that there was only place I wanted to go and thankfully that is happening.

"I'm really delighted that the move to St Mirren has come together and I can't wait to get started.

He continued: "I am looking forward to it and I know it will be tough but I've spoken with the manager and I see he is ambitious and he certainly doesn't want to be involved in the relegation battle again.

"I think with a wee bit of luck and a lot of hard work that St Mirren could push for a top 6 place, I don't see any reason why we can't. That is my aim, you have got to have ambition and you have to put something like that in front of yourself and I think that could be a possibility for us."

Thompson is a St Mirren fan and had his first look round their new stadium today: He said: "I'm very impressed with the new stadium and it looks great. Everything still looks new and the changing rooms are good and big, and I've heard good reports about the pitch and the quality of the playing surface.

"I went to Love Street regularly when I was younger and I was lucky enough to score there as a player, but that was for Dundee United! But I can't wait to get on the pitch to play for St Mirren at St Mirren Park, getting out there and in front of the St Mirren fans will be a big thrill for me."
