Thommo did really well when he came on last night and scored that point winning goal seven minutes from time, but Howe said after the game that he would be having surgery during March and could be out for several weeks.

Howe said: "Thommo is a happy man tonight. He did ever so well when he came on and took his goal really well. HIs all round game is excellent and he will be delighted to score against his former club.

"It's just a shame he has this operation looming over his head and he is going to have to have the operation in early March. He has an infection in his groin and he needs to have it sorted, but we are just delighted the surgeons can't get together until early March because otherwise he would have to go under the knife as soon as possible.

"We are going to lose him though and it will be a big blow. How long for, we don't know. It could be two weeks or it could be longer, it just depends what they find, as with most operations.

"In the meantime he won't be restricted though and there is nothing to say he couldn't start a game in this period before he goes under the knife."
