The first whistle of the season is for a Friend

There weren't too many complaints from Burnley fans in that last Football League game either. We looked to be heading for defeat against Preston in September 2010 when we trailed 3-1, but Friend's decision to send off Preston's Billy Jones turned things in our favour and three late goals gave us a 4-3 win.

Then Preston boss Darren Ferguson was, wrongly in my view, critical of the second yellow card for time wasting, but two Burnley managers can have grievances with him after his handling of three away games.

He had a poor game at Wolves in 2007 when Steve Cotterill's team lost 2-1 and Owen Coyle was far from happy with his handling of the away games at Watford and QPR in the next season even though both games were won.

Other than that there have been few problems and last season he refereed okay in the three games.

I suppose City might not have been too impressed with the offside goal at the Etihad, but if he referees tomorrow as he did in those games then everything should be fine.

He's currently 34th in RATE THE REF with a rating of 63.45 out of 10.

He refereed a total of 35 games last season, handing out 141 yellow cards and five reds. Of those yellow cards, 63 went to home team players and 78 to away team players.

The assistant referees are Constantine Hatzidakis (Kent) and Andrew Fox (Warwickshire). The fourth official is Richard Clark (Northumberland).
