Stockport friendly off

The National League North club have confirmed that they have reluctantly called off the game following discussions with Greater Manchester Police who had informed the club that the fixture would require 'Category A' resources based on intelligence which indicated the potential of disorder occurring in or around the footprint of the ground.

A club spokesman said: "We are disappointed that we will not be able to play against Burnley's youngsters, but the bill runs to several thousand pounds, so with a very heavy heart we have opted to cancel the match completely.

"Despite Burnley's first team also playing on July 28 away to Fleetwood, the police intelligence led them to believe there was a risk to our own fixture, so we are left with no alternative."

This reminds me of the police intervention with the Burnley v Blackburn reserve games in the Barclays Premier Reserve League in 2009/10 season, the home one forced into an all ticket affair at Accrington on a Tuesday afternoon at the end of the season, and both home and away games played in front of very small crowds with a ridiculously high police presence.

I was personally disappointed that this Stockport fixture clashed with Fleetwood because I was looking forward to a first visit to Edgeley Park since the 2001/02 season. Goodness knows what action the police might have taken had the Fleetwood game not been on. Given their intelligence, it might have even been mandatory coach travel.

The fixture has now been removed from the list of pre-season games in Friendlies/Key Dates within Fixtures/Tables/Dates which can be found in the Clarets Latest drop down menu.
