Steven Reid confirms his retirement

His move to Turf Moor was only ever going to be for one year. He considered retirement last summer but had played enough during 2013/14 for West Brom to tempt him to accept the offer from the Clarets.

Unfortunately, it hasn't quite worked out. He made just six Premier League appearances for us which included only one start, ironically at West Brom when we were down the bare bones in terms of player availability. He was replaced at half time that day by Nathaniel Chalobah.

He'd previously made two substitute appearances. His debut came as a late sub in the 0-0 home draw against Man United whilst his last appearance was again as a late substitute, this time in the 1-0 win against Man City when he came on for Danny Ings.

The New Year's Day 3-3 draw against Newcastle provided him with his longest time on the pitch. He was our third substitute that day, coming on for Kevin Long, who himself had come on as a substitute, some eight minutes before half time. In a very much reshuffled team, he played right back as the Clarets turned in a superb second half showing to draw 3-3.

I think today's news is inevitable for Reid who is aged 34. Having started his career with Millwall, for whom me made a league debut when he was just past his 17th birthday, he went on to represent both Blackburn and QPR, the latter in a loan deal, before moving to West Brom.

He's gone on to play a total of 398 games in club football and added to that with 23 caps for the Republic of Ireland.

Reid himself broke the news this morning on Twitter with the club subsequently confirming it.

He's not had the best of times with us with injuries constantly keeping him out of the reckoning but, ex-Rover aside, we wish him the very best as he moves on to a coaching career within the game.
