QPR, under Neil Warnock, are still to concede a goal, let alone drop a points. 4-0 and 3-0 wins have now been followed by a 2-0 success over Scunthorpe with our former loan player Bradley Orr scoring the first goal.
There were first wins of the season for Preston and Middlesbrough. Paul Hayes, the former Scunthorpe and Barnsley striker, scored Preston's goal in their 1-0 win over Portsmouth who this week again managed to raise four substitutes.
Only 9,666 saw that game, the lowest in the division this weekend. It would have been something of a shock for Steve Cotterill, the Pompey boss, to see so few inside Deepdale. During his time as Burnley manager he never witnessed a crowd of under 17,000 there.
That win was enough to see Preston climb clear of the bottom of the league and their place at the foot of the table has been taken by Sheffield United, today under the charges of Gary Speed for the first time at Middlesbrough. The home side's win, like Preston's, was also 1-0 in what could only be described as a very uninspiring game in front of a lot of empty seats at the Riverside. Kris Boyd got his first Middlesbrough goal in this game.
Goal of the day? That had to be Robert Earnshaw's equaliser for Nottingham Forest at Reading, and it was all down to goalkeeper Adam Federici. He had the ball in his hands and kicked upfield, or that was the plan. Instead he managed to kick it straight into the back of team mate Jem Karacan.
The ball dropped nicely for Earnshaw who won't score an easier goal all season. It wasn't a problem for Reading though, Federici apologised to everyone after the game.
