Second Burnley game for Sutton at Ashton Gate

Last updated : 04 November 2011 By Tony Scholes

t's not too often a referee gets two chances in the Football League but that's what happened to Sutton. He was promoted to the list for the 2005/06 season but after just  two seasons was axed and returned to non-league football.

During that time he refereed one Burnley game, our 4-2 home win over Barnsley in September 2006, the night that Gifton Noel-Williams hit a hat trick. He didn't have a particularly good night that night but his performances overall weren't considered good enough and by the start of the 2007/08 season he was back in non-league football.

Two years later he was recalled but he had to wait until last season for a first game back in the Championship when he refereed Swansea v Coventry. That was it last season but tomorrow's game will be his third in our league this season.

During this season he's refereed 15 games in which he's issued 45 yellow cards and four red cards. Of those yellow cards, 19 have gone to home team players and 26 to away team players. All four of the red cards have gone to away team players.

Three of the red cards have been in League Two games, including two for Burton Albion in their 3-1 defeat at Gillingham. The other was Middlesbrough's Joe Bennett in their 1-0 win at Crystal Palace. It was a decision that was some comfort to Burnley fans who felt Bennett should have been sent off at Turf Moor a week earlier.

Sutton's last game was Bournemouth's 3-1 win at Preston last Saturday. There were three yellow cards in that game. Bournemouth's Steve Cook and Marc Pugh were both been carded with Barry Nicholson of Preston joining them in stoppage time.

The assistant referees are Ian Rathbone (Northamptonshire) and Lee Swabey (Devon). The fourth official is Nick Hobbis (Birmingham).
