Saints are new leaders

Last updated : 20 September 2011 By Tony Scholes

Middlesbrough continued their remarkable run away from home with yet another victory. It's hard to believe that the team that we beat towards the end of last season, a team that looked real relegation candidates, hasn't dropped a single point away from home since.

On  Saturday a Marvin Emnes goal gave them a 1-0 win at Palace and that was enough to take them top with Brighton going down to defeat at Leicester where the home win relieved a bit of the pressure on Sven.

Southampton, though, were having none of it and recorded their sixth win in seven with Sunday's win against Birmingham to return to the top position they held after three games.

The performance of the day probably had to be Derby's. They didn't impress me when we beat them and they followed that up with a defeat at Coventry last week, but against all the odds they came back to win at local rivals Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

They went 1-0 down in the first couple of minutes from a penalty that saw goalkeeper Frank Fielding sent off, but with ten men won the game as Jamie Ward and Jeff Hendrick scored.

It's taken Derby back to fourth in the table but dumped Steve McClaren's team into the bottom three with Reading climbing out after a home win against desperate Doncaster.

Donny are bottom with just one point and they are followed by Bristol City, Forest, Coventry and us with five points. Ipswich's third goal last night in their win against Coventry moved us up a place in the table, back to 20th where we started the weekend.
