Russell to referee Derby game

Last updated : 22 April 2011 By Tony Scholes
Russell joined the Football League list of referees for the 2004/05 season but did not get a Burnley game until April 2008 when he was in charge of our 2-1 home defeat against Sheffield United, the last time the Blades beat us.

He didn't get a lot wrong that day; that was left to the Burnley players who turned in a disappointing performance, and we've had to wait for just over two years for his next Burnley game.

This season he's shared his games between the three Football League divisions with 14 of his 37 games in the Championship. In those games he's given out 37 yellow cards and four red cards.

27 of those yellow cards have gone to home players with 48 to away players but three of the four players he's sent off have been home players. His first red card of the season was our former loan player Richard Duffy, now playing for Exeter, and he was dismissed in their 2-2 home draw against Bristol Rovers.

The last red card was Millwall's Alan Dunne in a 2-0 home win against Leicester and that was on the last Saturday of 2010.

His most recent game was a week last Tuesday when he refereed Ipswich's 3-3 home draw against Middlesbrough. Mark Kennedy of Ipswich was the only player yellow carded in this game.

Russell sits in 18th place in the RATE THE REF table with a rating of 69 out of 100, that coming from that one game three years ago.

The assistant referees tomorrow are Sian Massey (Coventry), who was the subject of the comments that saw Sky's Andy Gray sacked, and Guy Stretton (Leicestershire). The fourth official is Wayne Porter (Lincolnshire).
