Robbie wins first Goal of the Month

Robbie Blake
Burnley, back in the Premier League and playing their first home game against last season's champions Manchester United. Over 18 minutes of the game gone and after a short bout of pressure a Stephen Jordan cross was headed away by Patrice Evra to Blake inside the box.

Robbie hit the ball on the volley and I think it is fair to say he caught it sweetly. I'm sure Ben Foster has never seen a ball hit towards him so quickly before and I reckon he must have been delighted to have got nowhere near is at is smashed against the net to lift Turf Moor off its feet.

It was a stunner, even placed alongside Robbie's wonderful collection of goals. Wade Elliott has a reputation for scoring special goals but not even his against Everton could come within a mile of stopping Robbie winning the first goal vote of the season.

He polled no less than 94.9% of the vote and that left Wade trailing in second place with just 4% whilst Steven Fletcher's two goals at Hartlepool mopped up the rest of the vote.

It had to be the biggest winner I thought but looking back it has been beaten once - but that was a special goal because of the occasion as well as the quality. It came in March 2005 in an FA Cup replay at Ewood Park.

But Robbie's is the first goal of the month this season and I think it is going to take one hell of a goal now to take the goal of the season away from him.
