Pre-season 2003 – it is not good news for the fans

Laxey Wheel - please not another opportunity to see it next year
The island was full of Clarets in 2001 for our first entry into the competition since the John Bond days of 1983 and despite a poor showing and an embarrassing defeat to the Isle of Man’s own team there was still much support for it again the year after.

Although the numbers were down slightly there was still a good turn out of Claret and Blue as we improved and made the final with many more making the day trip just to watch us lose than final with a last minute goal against Wrexham.

Two years in the same place is a bit much, we found that in 1997 with our second trip in succession to Northern Ireland and to the dismay of many we packed our bags for the attractions of the Laxey Wheel for a third time last week.

This time the numbers have been low and those who have been have joined with those who have stayed away in the hope that we can find something different in a year’s time.

No such luck I’m afraid if Stan has his way, he is already looking forward to a return in 2003. Although giving the first three days a miss he has once again made it clear that he wants to come again and said,

"It’s been another good week and a smashing place to come and I hope they invite us back again next year. It’s a great place to come and is so relaxing for the squad. The players are together and it is good for the camaraderie and team spirit and we always work hard."

So Stan hopes they invite us back next year. With the competition otherwise filled up with lower division clubs there seems no chance that they won’t offer an invitation to a side from Division One of the Nationwide League.

That means bad news for the fans then and the likelihood that the numbers watching will dwindle even further.
