Mixed fortunes for loan players

Alex Whitmore can be pleased with his debut

Cameron Dummigan was the injured player. He's been a fixture in the Oldham side since joining them on loan, missing out only through international calls. He's made seven appearances for the Latics but was missing last night as they took a 5-2 hammering at home against Southend with former Clarets Richard Eckersley and Joseph Mills in the full back positions.

Oldham are struggling and are now one of four North West clubs in the relegation positions with only Barnsley, Blackpool and Crewe below them. They go to Crewe this Saturday to face the bottom club when they will hope to have Dummigan fit against a Crewe side who came from two behind to win 3-2 last night at Colchester with Danijel Nizic again the substitute goalkeeper.

Poor Kevin Long went from hero to zero. He scored the winner for Barnsley last Saturday at Oldham but last night, with them chasing the game at 3-2 down at Peterborough, he got himself sent off.

His manager Lee Johnson said of the incident: "I'll have to look at it again. I've been there as a player and you're stretching and committed, showing the world you want to win. I don't know if he left the ground, I'll have to have a look."

Yesterday Alex Whitmore joined Chester on loan and he went straight into their starting eleven for the tough home game against Dover. They drew the game 1-1 against one of the promotion chasers with Whitmore playing the full game.

Jim Green, writing in the Chester Chronicle, said of his performance: "There were a few nervous moments but overall the Geordie defender can be pleased with his first outing. He began a little shakily but grew into the game and teamed up well with the excellent Ben Heneghan to deal with a dangerous Dover forward line.

"It was a tough ask to go straight into the starting line up as a replacement for the captain having only signed that afternoon but the 20-year-old didn't let himself down at all."
