McShane escapes ban

For many people in the crowd it looked a bad challenge, but television evidence showed there to be no intent whatsoever as the player went to challenge for a header against James O'Connor who was being held down by Jonathan Greening.

West Brom launched an appeal, but that's no guarantee as we found out last season when a red card for Wayne Thomas was ridiculously upheld. McShane faced missing the last two league games of the season, and potentially both play off semi-finals, but the FA Commission today have rescinded the red card and he is free to play in all of those games.

McShane received support from the Clarets with a letter from Steve Cotterill. West Brom said of that: "We are absolutely delighted Steve has gone out of his way to back our case. He is quite adamant in his statement that the incident did not warrant a red card. The fact that he has written a supportive letter is very significant."

Although the incident did cause O'Connor to spend the night in hospital I think most fair minded people would agree that the decision today is probably a correct one.
