Mawhinney's Mob – What next?

Last updated : 11 June 2004 By Tony Scholes

The three Divisions, previously Divisions One, Two and Three, have been changed from next season and will be called ‘The Championship’, ‘League One’ and ‘League Two’. This means that the Clarets will now play in ‘The Championship’ or ‘The Coca-Cola Championship’ to be precise.

The bungling Sir Brian Mawhinney said, "The Championship is a term steeped in the history of the League.

"Reclaiming it for our leading clubs will place a new enhanced emphasis on its status at the pinnacle of our competition."

Mawhinney added: "Not only is it a gateway to the Premiership, it is one of Europe's leading league competitions, in terms of the standard of football being played, the high quality of stadia and the numbers of supporters attending."

So he is reclaiming something that is steeped in history. Wrong Mr. Mawhinney for the simple reason that ‘The Championship’ has never disappeared, Norwich City are the current Champions.

The Football League Championship has been awarded to the winners of Division One ever since the League expanded to more than one division in 1892. So in fact what he has done is wipe away part of English football’s history.

At a time when clubs are struggling financially and in desperate need of help, what do they get from the failed politician and his mob? Nothing but a ridiculous change of name.

How much longer do we have to put up with this clown?
