Mathieson is tonight's referee

Last updated : 20 September 2011 By Tony Scholes

Mathieson is certainly not a new face to Burnley and not to league football. He's the elder statesman of our referees and is now in his 18th season having been promoted from the linesman's list ahead of the 1994/95 season.

He hasn't caused us a lot of problems over the years in fairness and he's probably best remembered for the mistake of allowing Sheffield Wednesday's penalty to be taken on Boxing Day 2007 without confirming it with Gabor Kiraly.

It was his third Boxing Day game with Burnley. He sent Steve Davis off in that horrible 4-2 defeat at Bury in 1999 and was also in charge a year earlier when we drew 3-3 at York.

He's also refereed some forgettable games such as the 5-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest and some memorable ones with the 3-2 win at Birmingham in 2001 standing out.

His last Burnley game was almost a year ago when he refereed our 0-0 home draw against Bristol City. He gave us a penalty that day which will be remembered because Graham Alexander missed it. He also handed out five yellow cards including three Burnley players Jay Rodriguez, Andre Bikey and Steven Thompson.

He's up at three yellows per game this season, with 24 in 8 games of which 13 have gone to home team players and 11 to away team players. The sending off of Fielding is his only red card this season.

There were also four yellow cards in that Forest v Derby game, to Chris Gunter, Joel Lynch, Ishmael Miller (Forest) and John Brayford (Derby).

The assistant referees tonight are Iain Siddall (Lancashire) and Jason Tyas (West Yorkshire) and the fourth official is Football League referee Carl Boyeson (East Yorkshire) whose last Burnley game was when he refereed our home draw against Portsmouth towards the end of last season.
