Marriner back for a third time this season

Last updated : 13 March 2015 By Tony Scholes

A third game this season but only a sixth Burnley game in total for the 44-year-old Marriner who is from Birmingham despite this being his 12th season since joining the Football League list at the beginning of the 2003/04 season.

He'd only been refereeing in the league for just over a year before getting his first game at the top level, a 4-0 home win for Charlton against Norwich in November 2004 and he was elevated to the select group for the next season.

Marriner's first Burnley game was back in the 2005/06 season against Southampton at home and two seasons later he refereed us on the road for the only time on New Year's Day 2008 at Blackpool.

In our last Premier League season of 2009/10 he was the only select group referee not to take charge of a single Burnley game.

On 26th March 2013, he sent off Rauf Aliyev of Azerbaijan in a World Cup qualifier against Portugal. By the same date a year later he'd sent off another 19 players, building a reputation as the referee most likely to send a player off. The last of those was Arsenal's Kieran Gibbs in their 6-0 defeat at Chelsea on 22nd March 2014.

Amazingly, the red cards have gone quiet since, with only two more. Stoke's Ryan Shawcross was shown red at the end of last season and this season his only red card was shown to Bournemouth's Yann Kermogant in a 2-1 win at Bolton.

His yellow card count is 85 in 25 domestic games this season, of which 42 have gone to home team players and 43 to away team players.

Andre Marriner is currently fourth in RATE THE REF with a rating of 75.54 out of 100.

The assistant referees are Gary Beswick (County Durham) and Darren Cann (Norfolk). The fourth official is Michael Oliver (Tyne & Wear) who will be carrying out the touchline duties for the second home game in succession.
