Marney extends Turf Moor stay

Marney joined Burnley from Hull City five years ago in May 2010, just after we and his club had both been relegated from the Premier League.

He was our first signing that summer under the management of Brian Laws who said: "I'm delighted we've got Dean. Midfield is an area we wanted to strengthen and for a young age he has got a lot of experience.

"He's tasted promotion with Hull and played for two years in the Premier League so he knows what's required. He is a box to box player who is full of energy and his link play with the midfield and forwards is exceptional."

At the time, Marney said: "I was getting a bit stale at Hull and needed a fresh start and I am really looking forward to getting Burnley back in the Premier League. That's why I've come here."

Marney did get us back in the Premier League but it would beyond his initial three year contract. During his third season he agreed a further two year deal, along with Ross Wallace, who also signed for us that summer, accepting a pay reduction.

He then went on to play a major part in the promotion and was very much a key player this season until injury brought things to an abrupt end when he suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament injury with the Clarets coasting at 2-0 up against West Brom.

With that second contract running out, the club confirmed today that he's signed a new one year deal with an option for a further year although no details have been given regarding the option. Strangely, the club have confirmed today that he signed the deal prior to the injury although the information has only been made public today.

It will be some time before we see Marney, who has made 188 appearances in his five years at Burnley, because of the injury but it is certainly good news to hear that he's committed to this deal that could take him into a seventh season as a Burnley player.
