Mahon just beats the deadline

The 27 year old Dubliner has joined us in a deal similar to that which saw Andy Gray become a Claret last week, he's here for the rest of the season on loan and will then sign a three year deal for a fee of £200,000 which has been agreed with Wigan.

Their manager Paul Jewell was not rushing to push him out of the door and said, “It was Alan's choice but he goes with my blessing. He is a good pro who has always tried his best for me but I understand that he wants to get some more first team action under his belt this season.”

Steve Cotterill, who had been working tirelessly to complete the deal, said, “We managed to sort out a deal with Wigan to take Alan Mahon until the end of the season, with an agreed permanent deal going ahead at the end of the season. We've agreed that and we're delighted to have him on board.

“It's been a mad rush to make sure we beat the 5:00 p.m. deadline to get him signed in time and we're looking forward to having him in the squad hopefully for the next three and a bit years.”

Steve also had a word for Jewell who had helped to get the deal through, “We've had a couple of chats this week and I'd like to thank Paul Jewell very much for his help in assisting the transfer to go through pretty quickly.”

First impressions count and I can still recall the first time I saw Mahon play, for Tranmere in a Youth Cup game against us. He was outstanding that night, the best player on the field, and looked to have a bright future in front of him.

He finally left Tranmere in the summer of 2000 and moved to Portugal to join Sporting Lisbon but it didn't quite work out and he was back in England before Christmas, signing a loan deal with Blackburn Rovers.

Two days later he made his debut for our local rivals on the Turf, coming on as a late sub for fellow Irishman Damien Duff. The move to Ewood Park was made permanent in the summer and he was there for another two and a half years during which time he had successful loan spells with both Cardiff and Ipswich.

There was another club very interested in signing him too, and he could have become a Claret then, but just over two years ago he signed for Paul Jewell at Wigan. He's made 56 league appearances for them, scoring ten goals, his last appearance coming in their FA Cup defeat against Manchester City at the end of January.

He's a Claret now and will go straight into the squad for our home game against Norwich tomorrow – welcome to the Turf Alan.
