Loan signings not for Clarets

Steve has never been a big fan of the loan system, although he has used it at Burnley when necessary. This season he's worked with the squad he started the season with and is not about to increase it with a loan signing or two.

“If you want to get somebody in on loan they have got to be better than what you've got,” he said today. “To pay someone who is better than what you've got he would have to come here and be in the team and be here for a good long spell or to the end of the season.

“If you bring a loan player in now then who are you going to replace who is doing well for us? It is very difficult. Then you need to ask does the loan player want it does he not want it, does he fancy it does he not fancy it. Then you upset whoever you have left out of the team.”

Steve said he would prefer to bring in permanent players although did admit he could have done with someone on loan recently. “If we could add to the squad, then I would want to add to it permanently. I would have wanted to add to the squad in the last couple of weeks, certainly with a centre half that I would have brought in and not worried about pushing a few peoples few noses out for a week or two because that would have been beneficial to us.

“What we've done is get through the last three weeks by the absolute skin of our teeth, make no bones about that. We're not here thinking look at us we've arrived and we've managed to get through that.

“But at this moment in time there's no one you would want to leave out to bring someone in on loan because you would upset all the good spirit you have gained. That's my view on loans, we needed someone on loan about a month ago, we don't need anyone on loan now.”
