Let's do it the Burnley way

By May, we'd played 61 games, had enjoyed one good cup run along with one fantastic cup run, and we'd reached the Premier League for the first time. Now, they all wish they'd swapped places with us and are suggesting they should try the Burnley blueprint for the coming season.

Every time you look at the media you find a manager or a player referring to the our 2008/09 season and how they would like to emulate the Clarets. Recently Nigel Clough said his Derby side should follow the Turf Moor route and even Palace midfielder Shaun Derry, on realising that their squad was now a lot smaller admitted they would get their inspiration from Owen Coyle's Burnley.

Even so, I was amazed today to read that a Forest player was suggesting they should be following our example. It doesn't quite work when you've got Little Billy at the helm and he's spending money for fun.

However, full back Chris Cohen was merely talking about the Carling Cup. He admitted: "There is always this situation where teams say they are wary of a good cup run because it can affect them in the league. But Burnley showed last year that it can really help you. They went on two cup runs and it gave them momentum.

"We are going to look to do the same now. We want to play the best teams and hopefully we can do that in the later stages of the competition. But what you cannot do is take teams like Bradford for granted. We know they will come here with a point to prove."

It's brilliant when you realise that others think the way forward is to copy us, but a word of warning to them, it's not that easy. Not even if you reduced your wage bill to fit in with the smaller income that Burnley generated compared to the likes of Derby, Palace and Forest.

It was done the Burnley way, and we are the only club that can ever do it that way.
