Keef signs for feeder club

Their inability to get the right club has been a source of amusement and frustration for years, eased only now by the fact that we are, after playing each other last season, two leagues apart.

Only yesterday morning I was trying to find some news on some of the players who left us at the end of last season, of Nick Liversedge who was training with Bury, of Brian Stock who was, for a while, at Oldham, and, of course, Treacy.

I'd heard he was training at various times with all the three other clubs mentioned above. I don't know how much basis there was to that speculation but certainly we had a couple of Wednesday fans on the message board suggesting he was on his way to Hillsborough.

Then, yesterday evening, came the news that he had signed a two year deal at Oakwell. On completing the deal he said: "I'm delighted. The clock was ticking down to the start of the season.

"I was wanting to get back onto the pitch and back to playing football again and Barnsley have given me the opportunity to do that and I am delighted to be here."

Treacy went beyond being the marmite player at Burnley. Some always wanted to give him a chance, others just described him as a waster who was robbing a wage from us.

There is no doubt he has had his difficulties and even back in the summer of 2011 we were warned by then Preston manager Phil Brown that Eddie Howe wouldn't be able to handle him. It's a shame when a player needs to be 'handled' but it is common knowledge that Treacy was banished from the first team squad prior to Sean Dyche coming in.

We sort of had the second coming, and beyond that. He's come back into the side and played well at times, none more so than when he replaced Michael Kightly in the team just after Christmas before falling victim to an injury which allowed Kights back in.

But, sadly, it was never over a consistent period and we certainly didn't get the best out of the player, something that probably could be said by supporters of other clubs he's played for.

I still think there's a good footballer in there, but that's up to him now. He was offered a way back in at Burnley but didn't take it. He has to take it now or his career will be on a rapid downward spiral.

I'll be keeping an eye on his progress at his new club. I still think a fully fit, committed and focused Keith Treacy could have been an asset to us. It's all about whether you can find a fully fit, committed and focused Keith Treacy.
