Johnny Mac steps up at Colchester

Colchester have become the 45th current Premier and Football League club to make at least one managerial change in 2015 and today's news means a former Claret will be in charge with the first team there until a new man has been appointed and it could even be permanent.

Chairman Robbie Cowling said: "It's no secret that Tony has been receiving a lot of flack from fans and some of it went too far. He felt his presence was being detrimental to the young players coming through but in my eyes I don't think he should have gone. For me, he will always be a legend at the club."

Cowling confirmed that assistant manager Richard Hall and development squad manager John McGreal would be in charge. He confirmed that he didn't expect to be appointing anyone from outside the club and that a permanent manager would be in place by the end of next week.

It's over eight years since McGreal last played league football, his last game coming for Burnley at Southend on a horrible night for us that saw him come off with an injury that ended his season.

He had a trial with Colchester that summer which came to nothing and decided to take his coaching badges. Eventually he did join Colchester on the coaching side and moved up to take charge of the development squad at the start of last season.

It will be his first involvement with the first team and he's already been installed as the clear favourite to land the job permanently.
