It is still not busy in the transfer market

Shan Derry - a £400,000 signing for Palace
Crystal Palace are the only 1st Division club to pay out a fee with the signing of Portsmouth midfielder Shaun Derry. The fee has been reported at £400,000 although the week’s only spenders have come out with a healthy profit with the sale of striker Clinton Morrison to Birmingham for £4.25 million.

Portsmouth have seen another player leave with Brazilian midfielder Stefano Miglioranzi moving to Swindon Town on a free transfer. There have as yet been no further incoming signings at Fratton Park this week despite them having been linked with a number of high profile players.

Coventry have made a bit of brass too with the sale of Swedish international goalkeeper Magnus Hedman to Celtic for around £1.5 million. Why couldn’t they have done that deal the week before the last game of last season? Their defender Gary Breen, also a star of the World Cup has joined West Ham after being released at Highfield Road.

The only other transfer involving a fee has been outgoing and saw Wolves collect £125,000 from Mansfield for midfielder Colin Larkin.

Paul Groves has had a busy week at Grimsby and has signed two players released by relegated Barnsley. Early in the week he captured central defender Steve Chettle and on Friday picked up left sided player Darren Barnard who had been linked on one occasion with the Clarets in some gossip column.

Leicester City, desperate for money as they prepare to move into their brand new Walkers Stadium, have managed by various means to reduce their squad by two. Former Bolton forward Arnar Gunlaugsson has moved on to Dundee United whilst Dennis Wise has also been asked to leave.

Wise was dismissed after fracturing team mate Callum Davidson’s cheek bone during a card game although he plans to appeal. Certainly wherever I have worked the penalty for hitting a work colleague has been instant dismissal and I can’t see that Wise has a leg to stand on with this.

In a way though it is a boost for Leicester and only today it is being suggested that they may allow Muzzy Izzett to move in a free transfer just to get him off the wage bill. It is estimated that he earns £33,000 per week.

Sheffield United have signed Tranmere striker Wayne Allison and look all set to pair him with Iffy Onoura up front. Allison, now 33, is another former Burnley target. Jimmy Mullen tried to sign him from Bristol City eight years ago after our promotion to Division One. He returned from the south west with Liam Robinson instead.

And to round up Gillingham have released Marcus Browning, Ashley Nicholls has moved from Ipswich to Darlington and Millwall’s Daniel Steele has signed for Colchester United.

There are just six days to go now and it remains to be seen whether the name Marlon will feature in next week’s transfer round up.
