Elder was the last of the championship team to make his debut, that coming against Preston at Deepdale as Harry Potts reshuffled when Bobby Seith pulled out with an injury. It wasn't just a case of a youngster filling in either; from that day he was the first choice left back and remained so until he left the club in 1967.
He went on to win forty caps for his country after getting his international bow at the age of 18. He also played 330 times for Burnley before signing for Stoke ahead of the 1967/68 season after a disagreement with coach Jimmy Adamson.
Unfortunately, injuries hampered his six years in the Potteries and he played just 80 games for them before hanging up his boots.
He was a frequent visitor to Turf Moor before moving to Spain but he's always assured of a good welcome when he does return which I'm sure will continue tonight.
