Ings stars at Old Trafford

Danny became the first Burnley player to score a league goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford since Ray Hankin gave us a 1-0 lead there in what was eventually a 2-1 defeat in December 1975.

He scored after 12 minutes to equalise for the Clarets (or the tin foil men) after an early opener for United and might just have had another early in the second half as we fell to a most undeserved defeat.

Ings was superb and I'm not sure he's played better for us. Everything about his performance was terrific from the incredible work rate right to his brilliant movement for the goal as he first went towards the near post before checking to leave himself unmarked to convert Kieran Trippier's cross with a diving header.

His performance won him 56.0% of the man of the match vote with only David Jones, who secured a 12.0% share, the only other player to reach double figures. Michael Kightly, who came in for the injured Dean Marney in our first team change in eleven Premier League games, was third with 9.4% of the vote, just ahead of Kieran Trippier who claimed fourth place with 9.0%.

The same four players took the top four places in the player ratings too. Again Ings was first; his rating was 9.00 out of 10 and is the second highest rating recorded all season although some way behind the 9.70 won by Ashley Barnes at Man City in December.

A rating of 8.53 gave Jones second place again but third and fourth swapped over. This time Trippier was third with a rating of 8.52 and Kightly came in fourth with a rating of 7.67 out of 10.

The points awarded towards the Clarets Mad Player of the Year are the maximum ten for Ings, six for Jones and three each for Kightly and Trippier. They've made little difference to the table other than to extent Ings' lead at the top to 27 points. That's a big lead with just 13 games to go.

The next vote will be underway on Saturday evening for the Chelsea man of the match whilst the result of the Man United game can be found below along with the updated player of the year table.
