In the Championship - The water's rising

Last updated : 02 July 2007 By Tony Scholes
Apart from a pitch that looks to be beyond repair, they have been left without telephones, without electricity and the ground had to be completely closed off. Work starts now to repair the damage. They will need a new pitch, and there are concerns as to whether they will be ready for the start of the season, and a lot of work is needed in other areas of the ground.

It's been a difficult time for Wednesday who are still waiting to make their first summer signing but that's not the case with a number of other clubs with a number of deals having gone through since we last reported a couple of weeks ago.

Cardiff, Charlton, Hull, Leicester and Norwich have all brought in two new players during this period. Cardiff fans will have been relieved to see Steven Maclean and Gavin Rae sign on the dotted line. They are both free transfers, from Sheffield Wednesday and Rangers respectively, and come at a time when Peter Ridsdale has warned fans not to expect too much in the transfer market.

There's no evidence of any goldfish having arrived, but it is not the best of times for a Cardiff side who ended last season in worse form than any side with just two points from their last nine games. They do still have a former Newcastle striker with them, but you get the impression they are trying to cash in. I wonder if he will be as quick to tell people he used to play for Cardiff when he finally moves on.

Charlton have been scouring the international market for their latest sigings. They have paid £400,000 for French Under-21 captain Yassin Moutaouakil from Chateauroux and also picked up Jose Semedo from Sporting Lisbon.

Ellery Cairo - one of Coventry's new signings
There's been no news from one of the other relegated clubs Watford whilst we perhaps shouldn't report on Sheffield United, they still think they are in the Premiership and are expecting news by tomorrow of just where they will be playing next season. They are no longer interesting though, Colin's gone and been replaced by one of the most boring people in football.

Coventry have finally entered the summer market. Ellery Cairo has arrived from Hertha Berlin and he's been joined by Arjan de Zeeuw who was released by Wigan at the end of last season. It is looking likely that they will also get Leon Best who has turned down the offer of a new contract at Southampton. With George Burley now having added Marek Saganowski to his squad on a permanent basis it means Best is further away than ever of establishing himself in the first team and has opted to move on. Coventry remain favourites.

Hull made a surprise move for Dean Windass as they fought off relegation last season. He came in on loan from Bradford City and proved to be the catalyst that saw them escape. He's now back at Hull on a permanent basis and has cost them £150,000. It's one in, one out in terms of forwards and they've managed to get £250,000 for Jon Parkin. Now I do call that good business. He's gone to play Pulisball at Stoke.

At the end of last week Hull also signed Bryan Hughes who has been released by Charlton. Once a Burnley target in his Birmingham days, this looks an astute piece of business by the fake tanned one.

I wonder just who it is that is making the signings at Leicester. Concerns have been expressed by some of their fans at the way the club is being run now, but that's the Mandaric way and you have to question just how much or how little input Martin Allen has in any transfers.

Mandaric is hoping to land Svetoslav Todorov who has turned down a deal at Portsmouth and meantime has brought in two more players. Sergio Hellings has been signed from Anderlecht whilst Leicester have also benefited from Charlton's cast offs with the acquisition of Radostin Kishishev.

Robert Earnshaw - left Norwich for Derby
I don't think Norwich fans are doing too much celebrating with news of their latest signings. Matthew Gilks from Rochdale is hardly going to get anyone excited. They've also signed Jamie Cureton from Colchester although that news followed the sale of leading scorer Robert Earnshaw to Derby for £3.5 million.

Norwich are also close to completing the signing of goalkeeper David Marshall from Celtic. He was on loan at Carrow Road last season and after it seemed it wouldn't happen they are now expecting the deal to be completed with Norwich paying £700,000 for him.

Other recent transfers have seen Northern Ireland international Ivan Sproule move from Hibs to Bristol City for an undisclosed fee. Hibs have also sold central defender Shelton Maris to West Brom for £50,000 where he will again team up with Tony Mowbray.

QPR have managed to wrestle Daniel Nardiello from Barnsley, Tony Craig has gone from Millwall to join the Legend of the Palace and finally Gillingham's Matt Jarvis has become Wolves' first summer signing.

Two Championship clubs have lost coaches. Colchester's Mick Harford has left to assist John Gregory at QPR whilst Southampton boss has brought in John Gorman to replace Glyn Snodin who has moved to West Ham.

It's July now so I'm sure there are a lot more transfers to come as teams return to training and start the build up to the new season.
