Homer Jones is season's last referee

Last updated : 23 May 2015 By Tony Scholes

He refereed our game at White Hart Lane against Spurs in December and somehow allowed Ben Davies to stay on the pitch after a shocking over the top challenge on George Boyd. Soon after there were several reasons why their opening goal shouldn't have been allowed, all of which he ignored.

He'd wrongly awarded a free kick for handball against Michael Keane but then allowed Spurs to take it with a moving ball and then incredibly didn't consider that Christian Eriksen might be active when the ball was played to him in an offside position.

If that was bad, then he turned up at Everton recently and surpassed himself. Sean Dyche said he had no problem with the red card he gave Ashley Barnes for two yellows, but other referees would have managed this far better and kept him on the pitch.

He'd already wrongly given a penalty against us but then came another shocker of a challenge from Kevin Mirallas that he considered worthy of only a yellow card.

It was the 13th time he's refereed one of our away games. We've won none of them, drawn four and lost nine. He's refereed 16 home games, of which nine have been won, six drawn and one lost. I think those stats tell their own story where this referee is concerned. What a pity he hasn't been given any of our home games.

He's refereed three games since our game at Everton and that's taken his total this season to 33 games in which he's issued 114 yellow and ten red cards. Of those yellows, 49 have gone to home team players and 65 to away team players.

Barnes isn't the last player he's sent off either. In those three games since he's got his red card out on a couple more occasions. He dismissed James Ward-Prowse in Southampton's defeat at Sunderland at the beginning of May and on Monday night sent off Cesc Fabregas in what was one of the more bizarre incidents I've seen this season.

There were five yellow cards in that game too and it was a rarity for Jones with more for home players than away players. He carded all of Jonas Olsson, Darren Fletcher and Craig Gardner of West Brom along with Diego Costa and Juan Cuadrado of Chelsea.

I don't know how he's going to referee tomorrow but we're the away team so I wouldn't expect too many favours, even if he has previously sent off a Villa player against us at Villa Park, having no option but to red card Marc Albrighton in the Carling Cup tie in 2010.

Michael Jones is currently 8th in RATE THE REF with a rating of 69.81 out of 100, although that does not take into account the game at Everton.

The assistant referees tomorrow are Richard West (East Riding) and Mark Scholes (Buckinghamshire). The fourth official is David Coote (West Yorkshire) who last refereed Burnley game was our 3-2 New Year's Day win against Huddersfield in 2014.
