Hegley gets Portman Road game

Last updated : 13 August 2010 By Tony Scholes
The more recent of them was our 1-1 draw at Derby in the promotion season. He had something of a nightmare that afternoon. On an afternoon when he got so much wrong, he somehow allowed Jay McEveley to stay on the pitch after raising his hands to Wade Elliott and then incredibly missed the foul on Joey Gudjonsson when he was clear on goal and inside the box.

That game at Gillingham though was his worst. On a day when he sent off both Gareth Taylor and ridiculously Dean West, manager Stan Ternent said at the time: "Dean West's red card really beggars belief. We have amateur people in a professional field and with all due respect I'm not the first person to say it and I won't be the last.

"People pay good money to watch football and it is destroyed by poor refereeing standards. It is just criminal in my book."

Burnley appealed both red cards and failed with both appeals, and that's happened again this week following a red card given by Hegley last Saturday to Charlton's Jose Semedo in their 1-0 home win against Bournemouth. Despite the support from Bournemouth's Michael Symes, the other player involved in the incident, supposedly fouled, the appeal was thrown out.

There were three yellow cards to add to the red in that game, but in midweek there were no cards as he refereed the Carling Cup game between Peterborough and Rotherham.

Hegley has certainly calmed down as far as cards are concerned. In his early league career they were mounting up, but last season in 36 games he handed out just 40 yellow cards and only one red card.

His performance at Derby, being his only Burnley game in the last three years, is the only game included in the Rate the Ref feature.

Tomorrow he will be assisted by John Magill (Essex) and Tony Mason (Kent). The fourth official will be Lee Betts (Norfolk).
