Greek return for Papadopoulos

It is believed that the Clarets have accepted an offer of around £250,000 from Panathinaikos for the international striker who has failed to win a place in the Burnley side in two years at Turf Moor.

Those two years have been interrupted at regular intervals because of international calls, something expected to continue, and it has been impossible for us to use him on anything like a regular basis.

He has seemingly collected far more air miles than anything else over the last two years and should he now go it is fair to say the sensational signing of two years ago will not have left a lasting impression.

When the Clarets opened the 2001/02 season at Hillsborough there was much disappointment that the new Greek striker was unavailable because of a training camp but none of us could have thought at the time that it would be over a year before he would get his first league start.

In fact there have been only 7 league starts in total with another 33 substitute appearances and with Stan making drastic changes to his squad it looks as though Papadopoulos could be the second of the contracted players to leave with Brad Maylett having already moved on to Swansea City.

Three years ago we started the season with three previously Greece based players with two goalkeepers Nik Michopoulos and Luigi Cennamo alongside Papadopoulos. The other two are now gone and it is looking very likely that Burnley’s Greek adventure is set to come to a close with this transfer of Papadopoulos.
