Grant v Austin at Wembley

Last updated : 13 May 2014 By Tony Scholes

A year ago Grant had just enjoyed his third, and most successful, season at Burnley but almost immediately the season finished he revealed that he wouldn't be signing the new contract on offer and would be returning to his first club Derby.

Austin remained with us a while longer. He returned for pre-season training, saw a move to Hull collapse because of an injury and then signed for QPR just two days before the start of the 2013/14 season.

Austin talked about signing for a club with an ambition to return to the Premier League and last night his goals took them to within one game of getting there. He missed a part of the season because of a shoulder injury but other than that he's done what he does and scored goals regularly.

He got both last night as they came from behind to beat Wigan, without Chris McCann who, like Grant, opted to leave last summer.

One day earlier Grant had watched, for the most part as a spectator, his side hammer Brighton in the other play-off semi-final, but he certainly played his part in the first leg when he made some outstanding saves to retain the 2-1 lead they had at the Amex.

So, one way or another, one of Grant or Austin will be a Premier League player next season, and they will battle it out in front of old manager Sean Dyche who will be part of the Sky team on the day.

For the other it will be another season in the Championship, the same as McCann and Martin Paterson, the other player who decided the grass was greener elsewhere last summer.

I'm out at a promotion party that day, but I'll be keeping a close eye on how things turn out. It's goalkeeper v goal scorer. I was an Austin fan when he was at Burnley, how could you not be? But my preference is for Grant to go up rather than him. What I really mean is that I'd prefer Derby to go up rather than QPR.

But well done to both of them. They must have had outstanding seasons to finish in the two places directly below us.
