Gordon Haigh passes away

Last updated : 23 August 2011 By Tony Scholes

Gordon was the second oldest living Claret behind George Knight and celebrated his 90th birthday only last week.

An inside right, Gordon made his debut for Burnley against Stoke City in the FA Cup of 1945/46 season, the first competitive post-war games.

In the following season he scored the winner against Newport County in his first league appearance.

Gordon moved to Bournemouth in 1950 and also played for Watford before moving back to our area where he played non-league football at both Rossendale and Nelson.

He continued to live locally until the sad news of his passing yesterday, just four days after his 90th birthday.

I'd wish to pass on my sincere condolences to Gordon's family and friends at this very sad time for them.
