Good weekend for top six in late shows

Last updated : 14 February 2011 By Tony Scholes

It was a late call for some of them. Cardiff had been expected to steamroller Scunthorpe but only won it with a Seyi Olofinjana goal five minutes from time although that goal was earlier than the winners for two of their rivals.

It was deep into stoppage time when Norwich grabbed their winner against Reading through captain Grant Holt and it was the same up at Middlesbrough as Swansea's Craig Beattie completed a comeback from 3-1 to win it 4-3 for the Welsh club.

Leeds, masters of late winning goals, were the only one of those four high winners to secure the points early in the game.

That left QPR and Nottingham Forest who drew with each other yesterday with Forest having to battle with ten men for three quarters of the game.

So it's very much a case of as you were at the top. Leicester, who won at Derby in the evening kick off, are now the closest to the top six but sit four points behind them whilst we are next and a further two points behind.

There's been no change down at the bottom with Sheffield United the only one of the clubs currently in the bottom six to get a point. That was another game with a late goal as Millwall scored in stoppage time to grab a point.

Only Coventry and Portsmouth of the teams in the bottom half were winners. For Pompey it brought an end to a run of ten games without a win, a run that must surely have had manager Steve Cotterill being reminded of Burnley 2006/07.

That game ended with him and his old Bournemouth mate Sean O'Driscoll having a touchline spat. They are good friends and both said afterwards that it was something and nothing.

This midweek we've got some re-arranged games to look at, and that includes Burnley's first ever visit to the new Cardiff City Stadium. There are four games on Tuesday and one on Wednesday.

The weekend results and stats are below along with the league's leading goalscorers, each club's disciplinary record and the midweek fixtures.
