Gifton could head south

He joined the Seagulls on the loan transfer deadline day four weeks ago as they made one last effort to try and rescue their and just two days later he netted his first goal since August in a 1-1 draw with Luton.

Immediately manager Mark McGhee said he was the player he had been looking for and after he scored again in a crucial 2-1 win at Ipswich McGhee said that Brighton would not have been in trouble had they had Gifton all season.

It was too late, and on Monday they were relegated, but McGhee is still keen to see the player make a permanent move to the Withdean, although he has admitted that the drop in division will have a serious effect on the club's income.

He said, “The reduction in television money will have an effect on the budget but I think we have seen enough to know that Gifton can make a contribution. A striker is an absolute priority, someone like Gifton who can do what he is doing already.

“I think we are going to need someone this good to get us out of League One, just as we needed someone to stay in the Championship.”

It's not worked for Gifton at Burnley, after getting off to a good start last August with two goals in the first five games and he's certainly keen to join Brighton should Burnley give him the green light.

He said, “If Burnley say they don't want me and they are going to let me go then hopefully Brighton will be an option for me. I've got until the end of the season then me and my advisors will sit down and think about it. At the end of the day it is all about playing football and if I'm going to get a chance at Brighton then that has to be an option.”

The striker has made 32 appearances for the Clarets, 18 of them starts, but he's failed to find the net since heading us in front against Derby in August. His last appearance for Burnley was at Stoke last month, coming on as a substitute for Chris McCann.
