Gifton – have Brighton gone cool?

The latest comments from the Withdean, although not ruling him out, suggest that manager Mark McGhee has another target who could now be well in front of Gifton as his first choice.

They have made enquiries about two strikers but McGhee has mentioned no names and in an interview this week he admitted: “The person we want to bring in to lead the line will be, at this level at least, a well known player, a household name if you like.”

Gifton started his football career in what is now League One, making his debut for Watford almost ten years ago back in September 1996 when they were in what was then the Second Division. But following Watford's promotion at the end of the 1997/98 season, now eight years ago, he's played all his football in the top two divisions which does not match the McGhee description.

He remains a target for Brighton, but much will depend on whether the south coast club are able to get their first choice. Gifton though has attracted interest from a number of other clubs and it would be a surprise if he didn't move on very soon, even if it isn't to Brighton.
