Gentile lands dual Excelsior role

It was the changes at Brentford that led to Gentile moving to Excelsior. Just a week ago, Piet Cremers followed former Excelsior manager Marinus Dijkhiuzen to Griffin Park as first team performance analyst and that saw Gentile replace him at Excelsior.

He's assumed the position of video analyst and advocate trainer; the first part of that job is the role carried out previously by Cremers whilst the advocate training will involve defensive coaching; replacing former Leeds and Bradford defender Robert Molenaar who has moved to FC Volendam as manager.

Gentile said: "In both positions I previously worked at Sparta, therefore Excelsior came to visit me. I know the coaches Fons Groenendijk and Andre Hoekstra and know how they work. I chose Excelsior after a conversation with Ferry de Haan (youth coach)."

The 46-year-old Gentile includes Burnley as one of seven clubs he played for with five of them in the Netherlands. He made just one appearance for Burnley; that was in a League Cup tie at Stoke with the Clarets already trailing 4-0 from the first leg.

He'd been signed by Adrian Heath in a blaze of publicity in the summer of 1997, but Heath left and he wasn't able to force his way into Chris Waddle's team, making just one reserve team appearance to add to that game at Stoke.

He did try once more in the UK and went on trial to Dumbarton towards the end of the 1999/2000 season. He made two Scottish Division 3 appearances as a substitute but failed to win a deal and returned home. They were to be his last two appearances in professional football.
